We celebrate Montana State University and the Bobcats
Montana State University in Bozeman is the largest university in Montana. Other campus locations include Billings, Great Falls and Havre.
As of 2025, the Carnegie Classification of Institutes of Higher Education designated MSU as an R1 institution, which denotes very high research output and doctoral education. That makes MSU one of just 187 institutions nationwide to earn the classification. And, unlike many universities, MSU does this with an enrollment profile that is mostly undergraduate students. MSU is also one of the top universities nationally in the number of its students who have received the prestigious Goldwater Scholarship, which honors the top undergraduates in the country pursuing research in STEM fields. In total, 92 MSU students have received the scholarship since it was established in 1989.
Montana State has been ranked by LendEDU and Best Colleges as well as Backpacker and Powder magazines as a top school for outdoor recreation. MSU has more than 100,000 living alumni, with over 45,000 alumni living in Montana Top alumni cities in Montana: Bozeman, Billings, Helena, Great Falls, Missoula, Belgrade, Kalispell, Butte, Livingston, Manhattan, Whitefish and Lewistown. Top regional alumni cities: Seattle, Portland, Spokane, Boise, Denver, Anchorage, Idaho Falls, Littleton, Salt Lake City, Minneapolis, Fort Collins and Las Vegas. Student Athlete GPA: 3.27 — 38th consecutive semester above 3.0.
The Bobcat women’s basketball team is second in the Big Sky in average attendance, the men are third. MSU finished the 2019 football season sixth in the FCS in average attendance and fifth in percentage of capacity. Montana State has won its annual rivalry series against the University of Montana, the Brawl of the Wild Cup, for three straight years(2016-17, 2017-18, 2018-19).
The Bobcat football team and Weber State are the only two Big Sky football teams to qualify for the FCS Playoffs in each of the last two seasons, with the Bobcats advancing to the semifinals in 2019 for the firsttime since 1984.
