Monday Minutes
Undergraduate Edition
Here are your Monday Minutes for the week of August 17-21, 2020.
Welcome to Fall 2020! The Department of Education is excited for the new semester. We warmly welcome new students AND those returning to our vibrant learning community. As today is Monday and the first day of school, we wanted to let you know that you can look forward to receiving an email from the Department of Education every week.
Please make a point of reading this email every Monday (or Tuesday), as it highlights key department announcements, opportunities, and events, particularly events hosted by one of the Department of Education’s student clubs. It covers everything you need to know in a single email message.
From the Department Head
Welcome to the first day of what is sure to be a school year discussed in history books fifty years from now! Your department is ready to provide you an educational experience that will help you achieve your personal and career goals. I encourage you to take time to reflect upon this experience as we are all learning how to operate in a new manner. I encourage you to support and be kind to each other because learning means growth, and sometimes growth is uncomfortable or even painful. Through reflection, we can process what we are learning and incorporate this learning into our daily lives. This semester won’t be easy, but I have the utmost faith in each and every one of you. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to department staff if you need anything at all. We may not be physically together very much this fall, but we are together in purpose.
Take good care,
Dr. Ann Ewbank
From the Advising Office
- Be sure to check out our list of Important Dates for Teaching Majors.
- The Education Advising Center is currently offering a mix of in-person and remote advising options. We’re planning in two-week increments, so the following is our schedule through Friday, August 21
- In-Person Walk-In Hours: M-F, 9:30-11:30 am and 1:30-3:30 pm, Reid 123 (down the hall from the Education Advising Center). There will not be morning walk-in hours on Friday, August 14, due to the Education Department’s Fall Retreat.
- Phone or Webex Appointments: M-F, 8:00 am – 5:00 pm, as available. You can schedule appointments at www.montana.edu/education/advising/calendars.html.
- And, as always, you can contact us via email or phone. We’re available to respond during normal business hours (M-F, 8:00 am – 5:00 pm).
- The Center for Bilingual and Multicultural Education in Reid 418 is open M-Th 9am-3pm for students, staff and faculty. The Center offers a safe and socially-distanced space for students to collaborate and receive support.
- Students in chemistry labs this fall: Please plan to attend the lab that appears on your schedule, whatever you see in D2L. There have been some errors arising in D2L as TAs have tried to link their lab sections together.
- All Monday Minutes are archived and available for your reference.
- Make sure to check the MSU COVID-19 webpage frequently as university and system-wide updates are available all in one place.
From the Office of Field Placement and Licensure
- Fingerprint Clinic/Background Checks: The Field Placement & Licensure office with the University Police Department (UPD) has partnered to hold a fingerprint clinic August 26th – August 28th, 11:00am – 4:00pm (all days). Due to COVID-19, UPD has requested only scheduled appointments for the fingerprint clinic to control the number of students in the facility. UPD is not doing fingerprints except during the clinic.
- Students will need to sign-up for the fingerprint clinic via MSU Box and should receive an invite from their instructor as well as a link to a video and instructions on how to access MSU Box. Appointments are in 10 minute increments with two spots for each time slot. Registration instructions are attached and also available in video form at https://montana.techsmithrelay.com/f2IW.
- Students should bring the following with them to the clinic:
- Government issued ID (driver license, passport, or state ID)
- Fingerprint card filled out
- Check or money order for $10.00 (made out to MSU), or cash, to get fingerprints done
- Background check paperwork (Forms: NCPA/VCA, Applicant Rights and Consent to Fingerprint, MSU Consent and Release)
- Check or money for $25.00 made out to Criminal Records to have background check processed by the Department of Justice.
- ***MASKS ARE REQUIRED TO PARTICIPATE IN THE FINGERPRINT CLINIC***
- Additionally, if a student is attending MSU solely online, we ask that s/he requests for us to mail a fingerprint/background check packet to them. Otherwise, the info on the fingerprint card will be incorrect. A return envelope will be sent with the packet so students do not have to pay for postage.
- If a student is unable to attend the fingerprint clinic, the Gallatin County Detention Center will fingerprint by appointment only. Students can call, 406-582-2130 (option #5), to schedule an appointment.
- Fingerprint packets are located in the hallway outside of Reid Hall 247.
- CPR/1st Aid Certification: Students who have applied for spring 2021 student teaching are required to be certified in CPR/1st Aid for adult and child. There are a few locations in Bozeman where students can schedule a class:
- MSU Recreation Sports & Fitness Center . Go to Program Registration, Aquatics Health & Safety (heart icon), (406) 994-5000. At this time MSU Recreation Sports & Fitness Center is not scheduling classes due to COVID-19. We will keep students posted if this changes.
- Big Horn Fire Company, (406) 581-0412, info@bighornfire.com.
- Jolt CPR, Cherry Eustace (406) 581-4738 or Julie Evans (406) 579-3703, joltcpr@gmail.com.
- We are also trying to coordinate CPR/1st Aid certification classes with MSU Safety & Risk Management.
- Spring 2021 Student Teaching Interviews & Final File Reviews: The application deadline for spring 2021 student teaching closed August 15th. Teacher candidates can anticipate receiving information within the few weeks.
- The CPR/1st Aid certification, GPA Content Area Calculator, and fingerprint/background checks are due at the time of teacher candidate’s virtual final file review—which is mid-to-late September—with our Licensure Technician, Rosemary Madero. In the meantime, we ask teacher candidates to email the CPR/1st Aid certification and GPA Content Area Calculator to her, rosemary.madero@montana.edu, prior to the file review. Fingerprint/background check paperwork can be dropped off outside of Reid Hall 247, or, if attending the fingerprint clinic Rosemary will be there to collect the paperwork at that time.
