2024 - Scott Monfort

Maria Velazquez

Scott Monfort is an associate professor of musculoskeletal biomechanics in the Mechanical and Industrial Engineering Department of the Norm Asbjornson College of Engineering.

As an example of his innovative approach to student success in the classroom, Monfort described how he structures the 300-level class Advanced Mechanics of Materials.

“I have shifted to using a more involved active learning strategy of a flipped classroom ” he said. A flipped classroom is a teaching method in which the students study the material to be discussed prior to class, allowing class time to be devoted to group discussion and answering student questions. “This shift has continued to increase student energy in the classroom, maintain high attendance, prompt students to identify and ask question on the content and allow collaborative problem solving.”

Sweeney Windchief

Linda Karell, an associate professor in the Department of English, has been a faculty member for 27 years, has been described by various students as a mentor, guide, role model and voice in the darkness when they need help, according to her colleague, Ben Leubner, in a letter of nomination. Leubner wrote that Karell teaches her students to think critically and confront complex issues with curiosity and a desire to find workable solutions. She recently developed two courses, a senior seminar on LGBTQ literature and a graduate seminar on the relationship between literature and activism. The courses are designed to promote understanding and conversation surrounding gender while fostering diversity, equity and inclusion.
