Dr. Jelinski has been involved in University Governance since 1976. Since 1995 he
has served on the Salary Review Committee, the University Governance Council Steering
Committee, the University Promotion and Tenure Committee, and as Chair of the Faculty
Affairs Committee. He played a pivotal role in establishment of the current structure
of Faculty Council which has representatives from all academic departments. He is
currently a member of Faculty Council. As Department Head of Modern Languages and
Literatures (1978-1990) he led the program in its transition to a quality research-oriented
academic department, developed procedures for annual review and special reviews and
designed a department-wide program of teaching evaluations. He also established a
unique class for advanced Modern Language majors which has evolved into the "Instructional
Perspectives" courses in which students gain practical experience by working directly
with faculty teaching the beginning language courses. Since leaving the headship he
has developed a Policy for Adjunct Instructors and designed a model Foreign Languages
Proficiency Exam which all teaching majors must pass before being approved to register
for their practice teaching semester. He currently serves as the Coordinator of Spanish.
Dr. Jelinski is especially proud to have established the Steven L. Johnson Memorial
Scholarship which provides an annual $500 scholarship to the outstanding Spanish student
selected by the scholarship committee.
