Recycling is a simple but high-impact habit that tackles environmental, economic, and social challenges. It supports sustainability by conserving resources, protecting ecosystems, and reducing emissions that postive impact. When everyone participates, small daily actions add up to a cleaner, more responsible future. Recycling at Montana State is sent to Four Corners Recycling where it is processed and sent to Utah, Washington, and other locations to be utilized in a remaufacturing process.

Metals
- Aluminum Cans
- Steel/tin Cans ALL
- Cans need to be empty!

Plastics
- Bottle-shaped #1 & #2 Plastics (Bottles and Jugs)
- Plastic Bottles

Cardboard
- Corrugated Cardboard (Flattened)
- Brown Packaging paper
- Remove all inside/outside packaging (plastic wrap, bubble wrap, styrofoam peanuts, etc).

Paper

Paperboard
- Single layer paper board can now be included with cardboard.
- Remove inner packaging (plastic wrap, foil, bags, etc).
- Remove all food.
- Please flatten.
- No frozen food boxes.

Compostable Items
- Compostable items including paper and plastics need to be sorted into compost bins, not recycling
- #7 PLA coated plastic & paper.

Plastics
- Film plastic bags: Grocery stores collect bags for recycling
- Wrappers and sauce cups are not recyclable
- Plastic containers and clam shells are not recyclable

Glass and Ceramics
- Ceramics and glass are not recyclable at Montana State Unviersity
- For personal glass recycling, please reach out to independent vendors in Bozeman or drop glass off at Four Corners Recycling

Food Boxes
- Laminated and heavily dyed paper is not recyclable
- Wax coated food boxes, especially those found in freezers are not recyclable
- Pizza Boxes with grease and food contaminants are not recyclable

Styrofoam
- Sytrofoam is not recyclable
- Be sure to help reduce contamination by sorting carboard and sytrofoam that may be shipped together

Paper Cups
- Paper cups are not recyclable
- Check to see if cup is compostable!
- Most paper cups have a plastic lining on the inside which can create enough contamination to ruin a batch of paper recycling.
Types of Recycling on Campus
The two types of recycling found across campus are Multi-Stream and Single Stream Recycling.
Multi-Stream Recycling refers to the proper sorting of recyclable materials into different bins while disposing of items. Multi-Stream Recycling sites are found across campus in all:
- Academic Buildings
- Strand Union Building
- MSU Library
- Student Wellness Center
Single Stream Recycling refers to one bin for all recyclable materials to be collected in. On Campus this includes carboard, paper, plastics 1&2, and cans. Across campus, locations with single stream recycling are marked with green recycling bins. Single Stream Recycling sites are found across campus in:
- All Residence Halls
- Brick Breeden Fieldhouse
- Bobcat Stadium
- Family & Graduate Housing
