STI Testing

We’re working on launching a new, discreet, free or low-cost STI testing service right here at SHS.

Why This Matters

Sexual health is an important part of your overall well-being. STI’s often don’t show symptoms, but can still affect your health and your partners. Regular testing helps you stay informed and healthy! We’re committed to making STI testing:

Accessible – conveniently located on campus inside the Student Wellness Center.

Affordable – FREE or low-cost options available.

Private – discreet services to protect your privacy without needing to see a medical provider, just a short appointment in the lab.

Know the Facts…

Did You Know? STIs Are More Common Than You Think!

Whether it’s oral, vaginal, or anal sex, anyone who’s sexually active can get an STI.

  • 1 in 4 college students has an STI.
  • STIs affect people of all ages, backgrounds, and identities.
  • Most people don’t show symptoms, so you might not even know you have one.

The Only Way to Know? GET TESTED.

  • Regular testing is the best way to stay informed and protect yourself and your partners.
  • Testing is simple and often just a quick urine test or swab.
  • The good news? Many STIs are curable and all are treatable.

What confidential tests are available at MSU Student Health Services?

Real Talk: STI testing isn’t one-size-fits-all.

There’s no single test that checks for all STIs. What you get tested for depends on your sexual activity, anatomy, and risk factors – like new or multiple partners, condom use, or past STIs.

What to Expect

           Testing is:

  • Recommended at least once a year for sexually active young adults for Gonorrhea and Chlamydia. More frequent testing may be recommended or desired.
  • It can take up to 2 weeks after exposure for tests to accurately detect Chlamydia and Gonorrhea. If your last sexual contact was recent, please wait 14 days before testing or call 406-994-2311 if you have concerns.
  • If your test result is positive, you may need to schedule an appointment with a medical provider to receive treatment and you will receive a phone call from a provider as well.
  • Testing too soon after completing treatment for Chlamydia or Gonorrhea may give a false-positive result. You may want to test early but please wait for the instructed amount of time before you are re-tested.
  • Additional confidential testing can also be completed for:
    • Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) screening – this will require a quick, usually painless blood draw
    • Syphilis – requires a blood draw and can be done with an HIV test, no multiple pokes!
    • Trichomoniasis

All results will be available through your private and secure PATIENT PORTAL.

Cost for STI Testing

With payment of your student health fee (assessed in your tuition if you are enrolled in 7 credit hours or more), Chlamydia and Gonorrhea testing is available free of charge. Tests that involve a quick and usually painless blood draw may require a small collection fee of $6. Look for promotional times throughout the school year for blood draw collection fee waivers!

Important Notices
