The Air Force Officer Qualifying Test (AFOQT) is a standardized exam used to assess verbal and mathematical aptitude, similar to the SAT or ACT, as well as additional aptitudes relevant to Air Force officer career fields.

All AFROTC cadets must pass the Verbal and Quantitative sections of the AFOQT to compete for enrollment in the Professional Officer Course (POC) through the POC Selection Process (PSP) during their AS200 year.

AFOQT scores are also used to determine eligibility for rated career fields, including:

  • Pilot
  • Combat Systems Officer (CSO)
  • Air Battle Manager (ABM)

For pilot applicants, AFOQT scores are a component of the Pilot Candidate Selection Method (PCSM) score.

Cadets Taking the AFOQT

Frequently Asked Questions

When should I take the AFOQT?
Cadets are required to take the AFOQT during their first semester in AFROTC - Det 450 offers the AFOQT at least once each semester, typically in Mid-October and Mid-March in the Fall and Spring Semesters, respectively. Early testing provides additional opportunities for retesting if needed.

Do all AFOQT sections matter?
Yes. While all cadets must pass the Verbal and Quantitative composites, other composite scores are important for rated career fields (if applicable) and their Academic Aptitude score will be considered during the POC Selection Process (PSP).

Can I study with other cadets?
Yes, if you have not yet taken the AFOQT. After testing, AFROTC policy prohibits participating in group study sessions with cadets who have not yet tested.

How many times can I take the AFOQT?
You may take the AFOQT up to three times, with at least 90 days between attempts. You must obtain a waiver from the Region Commander for your third attempt of the AFOQT.
