Recent conversations at MSU about the use of artificial intelligence in teaching, research and workforce development have surfaced a significant amount of interesting work. Activities at MSU related to AI underscore the critical importance of ethics and the humanistic dimensions of AI—issues that MSU is committed to addressing through research, dialogue and responsible innovation, which will be embedded in both symposia.

Montana State University is positioned to be a leader and innovator in the use of AI and the human implications of AI. In addition to these symposia, MSU recently submitted a proposal to the MT Board of Regents requesting approval to submit a formal request to launch an Institute on Artificial Intelligence. As proposed, this institute will expand MSU’s research capacity across scientific, humanistic, agricultural, business, technology and professional fields.

The scope and scale of AI-related research, teaching and related ventures on our campus will help prepare our students with the skills and knowledge they will need in business and industry, and will help Montana communities adapt and manage a wide range of emerging technologies.

To support this effort MSU will be hosting two symposia in 2026.

  • March 26, 2026: A faculty symposium on AI that will feature our own faculty who will present their research
  • October 1-2, 2026: A major national symposium on The Future of AI to be held in the new Gianforte Hall that will bring together leading national speakers, faculty and students from MSU.
