Process to Store Weapons
- During regular business hours (M-F, 8am-5pm) go to the MSU Police Department front counter inside the Huffman Building to ask to check in/out your weapon. It is not necessary to bring your weapon into the main office but you may, as long as it is in a case.
- If you need to check a weapon in/out after regular business hours, you can use the phone mounted on the wall near the front counter to call Dispatch. Once you pick up the grey phone, it will automatically call the dispatch office. You simply need to let them know you are the MSU Police Station to do a weapons check. They will then collect some information and dispatch an officer to assist you. Please wait in the lobby until the officer meets you. An officer will respond as soon as possible (if in the building, usually within 10 minutes - if no one is in the building it can take 20-30 minutes or more to respond).
- Wait in the lobby until prompted by the responding officer. Then you can meet them at the Weapons Storage Facility. The access door is located outside the main Police Station entrance to the East. When you are at the outside door, ring the bell and the officer will buzz you into the vestibule.
- When you use the Weapons Storage Facility for the first time you will be asked some basic contact information (name, address, phone, etc.), you will then have to sign the weapons storage agreement electronically, and you will have to provide ID (ID is required each time a weapon is checked in or out).
- ALL firearms must be in a case and MUST BE UNLOADED before checking them into the Weapons Storage Facility. ALL ammunition MUST BE STORE SEPARATELY. A case is preferred for storage of a bow, but is not required. All arrows must be separate from the bow with with tips covered or otherwise protected.
- Once inside the vestibule, the MSU PD will inspect the weapon to ensure that it is unloaded. If your case locks with a key or combination, you MUST be able to open the case at this time. MSU PD WILL NOT ACCEPT ANY CASES THAT WILL NOT OR CANNOT BE OPENED.
- Once the weapon is accepted for storage, the MSU PD will attach a provided zip tie with a uniquely identifying number to the weapon case and enter that information into the system. The MSU PD staff member will assign the weapon a storage location and will record the location in the system. The MSU PD staff member will also attach a property system barcode label to the tag and place the tag on the case.
- The owner will acknowledge the weapon check-in and user agreement by providing an electronic signature. The owner will receive an emailed receipt providing a copy of the user acknowledgment and listing of the items checked into the Weapons Storage Facility.
