Studying abroad is an excellent opportunity to have a life-changing experience. You're surrounded by food, cultures, people and ideas that you might not have had before. It is also an opportunity to recognize what defines you as a person and take on new identities.

Whether you are just considering going abroad or are already in the process of applying, we encourage you to reflect on how your background, beliefs, and lived experiences may shape—and be shaped—by your time abroad.

Studying abroad is not just about going to other countries; it is also an opportunity to learn more about yourself and what you consider important. You may find that you are perceived differently than how you are seen here on campus, in Bozeman, in your hometown, or elsewhere in the United States or your home country. These perceptions can lead to interesting conversations and friendships, but it can also make you feel uncomfortable, unsure, or like you need to defend your identity. For this reason, it's important to identify what you consider to be important aspects to your identity and how those identities might be perceived and impact your experience.

Every student at MSU has an identity that makes them a valuable member of the Bobcat community. These resources are important for everyone, and we highly encourage you to become familiar with the cultural norms, values, and social dynamics of the communities you will experience while studying abroad. Understanding the local context can help you navigate new environments with greater confidence and respect.

The resources below are intended as a starting point for questions you may want to think about before your study abroad experience. For additional, location-specific information about your study abroad destination, feel free to come to a drop-in advising appointment with the Study Abroad Team, make an appointment with your program representative, speak with staff at Student Commons (Student Commons staff can provide identity-based advising, peer connections and support navigating belonging abroad),reach out to study abroad program alumni, seek guidance from other affinity offices on campus, ask questions to faculty who teach and research in these locations, and find other information online. Montana State is also a member of DA Global Access Network, which works to expand access to global opportunities for all students. Take a look at ISEP’s Identity Abroad pages for some additional information.

Your identity is important, at home and abroad. Studying abroad is an excellent opportunity to explore and redefine who you are in a global context. Please take this opportunity to reflect and imagine all the things that studying abroad could be for you!
